NTC Thermistor

NTC (Negative Temperature Coefficient) refers to the phenomenon of thermistors and materials with a negative temperature coefficient and an exponential decrease in resistance as temperature increases. NTC can be divided into two categories: power type and temperature sensing type.

Power type NTC thermistors are often used to suppress surges in power sources. When the circuit power is turned on, a surge current that is many times higher than normal operation will be generated in the circuit. The initial resistance value of NTC thermistors is relatively large, which can suppress excessive current in the circuit and protect its power source circuit and load. When the circuit enters a normal working state, the thermistor causes the NTC temperature to rise due to the passage of current, and the resistance value drops to a very small value, which will not affect the normal operation of the circuit. NTC thermistor for surge suppression is a high-power type thermistor commonly used in electronic circuits with capacitors, heaters, and motor starters.

The NTC temperature sensor utilizes the characteristic that the resistance value of an NTC thermistor rapidly decreases with temperature rise under a certain measurement power. By measuring its resistance value, the NTC thermistor can determine the corresponding temperature, thereby achieving the purpose of detecting and controlling temperature.
