Gas Discharge Tubes
Ceramic gas discharge tubes (GDTs) are devices composed of one or more discharge gaps encapsulated in ceramic tubes filled with inert gas. The electrical performance of GDT depends on factors such as gas type, gas pressure, internal electrode structure, and manufacturing process. GDT can withstand surges of up to tens or even hundreds of kiloamperes, with extremely low capacitance, and is used to protect electronic devices and individuals from the hazards of transient high voltage. Spark Gap Protectors (SPG), also known as powerful gas discharge tubes, are discharge microgaps obtained by the distance between electrodes. The tubes are filled with inert gas and sealed with glass tubes and magnesium wire. When the voltage at both ends of the SPG increases, nearby gases are ionized and discharge phenomena begin to occur at the micro gap. As the voltage drop between the two poles gradually increases, the discharge current also increases, and its ionization zone also expands. At this time, the discharge current flows through the gas ionization zone to the other pole. When the current continues to increase to a certain extent, there is a transition from glow discharge to arc discharge in the tube, and the product enters a low resistance state from a high resistance state. The voltage at both ends of the SPG also decreases, thereby protecting the subsequent circuit. After the abnormal voltage disappears, The product has returned to a high resistance state. Gas discharge tubes have the advantages of high speed, high flow rate, and low junction capacitance, and are commonly used for circuit lightning protection or surge protection. Due to its continuous current characteristics, it should be used in conjunction with clamp type protection devices such as MOV when applied to power circuit protection.
